Are you eating Non-GMO?
It seems like lately everyone is talking about “are you eating Non-GMO?” Even some of us that like to watch what we eat, count our calories, concerned about environmental sustainability, often don’t know what Non-GMO means. So what exactly is it?
GMO stands for “Genetically Modified Organism.” And means just what we think it means; a plant, animal, or other organism whose genetic material has been changed in such a way that would not occur naturally. The industry might do this to introduce a new trait or enhance an existing one, such as resistance to pests, diseases, or the ability to better withstand heat from environmental factors. So “Non-GMO” simply refers to the opposite. These are foods and products that are not made from genetically modified organisms and considered more “natural.”
The fact that consumers consider Non-GMO more natural is what drives its demand. Being thought of as more natural supports the notion that it is healthier with less of an impact on our environment like the use of natural pest control methods and natural crop rotation; which can rely less on harsh chemicals resulting in a healthier soil.
What Non-GMO Certification Means
For products to be labeled as “Non-GMO” producers should be certified through a third party that uses rigorous testing, facility inspections, and ongoing improvements in the testing system. The Non-GMO Project is the most recognized certifying body on Non-GMO products and their thorough approach nurtures transparency and trust. They administer “North America's most rigorous certification for avoiding GMOs” and Jidori Chicken is proud to be a certified brand with the Non-GMO Project.
Despite the growing popularity of Non-GMO products, it is not without its detractors and criticisms. One such criticism is that by labeling products as “Non-GMO” it implies that GMO products are somehow unsafe for consumption, which is not conclusively supported by science. And that superficial labels like “Non-GMO” leads to higher costs for the consumer with no real benefit.
What it all boils down to is consumer choice and what people are comfortable consuming. The debate about our food has been alive since humans ever existed and this won't end with Non-GMO. This is why JiDORI Chicken offers both Non-GMO and Organic options for our fresh chicken products. Bon appetit!
